Now that my father has passed away , I can speak of this . He returned from WW II with 3 silver stars and 2 bronze stars for valor . He fought in Africa , Italy , Normandy , France and the Ardennes that we know of . When I tried to research where and when these acts of heroism occurred I found that nearly 95 percent of all the records of our military heroes were destroyed in a warehouse fire in St Louis . All we have is his dd 214 with the medals he received listed .
It was widely known to his circle of friends that he returned from the war with a nazi ear necklace and would wear it while riding his 1947 Harley Davidson . My grandfather was extremely upset about this when he heard of it and had my father destroy it . Dad never spoke about this with any of us and we later found out about it after he passed away . Nazi ears were used as a sort of currency . they were traded for anything from smokes , hot meals , sexual favors ect ... from locals . Did I ever see this necklace ? No , but I did talk to those who had . It was described as 6 ears and 3 nazi medals on a dog tag chain . This was described to me by my cousin shortly before he passed away, who was a son of my dads' only sister . Supposedly they swore to never speak of it .
