Happy Halloween! Trick ‘R Treat and Monsters On Sale Now!

Friday, October 29th, 2010

By far, Halloween is our favorite holiday of the year, so did you think we were gonna miss doing a special drop for it? Today, we have two special posters to present to you; the first being Drew Millward’s TRICK ‘R TREAT!

Poster by Drew Millward. 15″x 24″ screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 120. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. Click HERE to buy.

We were talking to the director of TRICK ‘R TREAT, Michael Dougherty, a while back and we mentioned that we would love to do a poster for this movie. He said DEFINITELY and the rest is history. Our first choice for this was one Drew Millward and as you can see, he nailed it. This is EXACTLY what we were hoping for. Pretty much everything that is in the movie is represented in some way within this poster. NOTE: Please allow 2-3 weeks delivery on this one.

The second poster in this drop is something REALLY special. Take a look….

Printed by D&L Screen Printing. 25 1/4″ x 32.5″ Hand distressed w/ bombs, acid and other materials. Edition of 50. Click HERE to buy.

What you are looking at is a one of a kind metal poster for the film MONSTERS that is being released theatrically today. If you aren’t familiar with MONSTERS, you should be. Here is the synopsis:

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life form began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain “the creatures”……

We decided to actually create the sign warning of the impending contamination from the monsters, so we first had D&L Screen Printing print 50 “clean” MONSTERS posters on sheets of metal. After they came in, we hired Daniel Brough-Stevenson to hand distress the posters. Daniel came highly recommended because of his work on Robert Rodriguez’s films. Daniel took about a week to do all 50 and USED ACIDS TO BURN THE PRINTS and ACTUALLY BLEW THEM UP WITH BOMBS! These posters have literally been through a war and are all unique. The one pictured above is an example of what you should expect, but rest assured, you will be getting something that nobody else will have. Here are some detail pics of the battle damage on the posters…

This is one of my favorite projects and the #1 rule for it was DO NOT CHEAP OUT. We could’ve easily put a distress filter on the posters and had them printed that way, but we made a vow at the beginning to actually go out and ravage these. We think these are really awesome and we hope you enjoy them. Happy Halloween!

Mondo Presents: STAR WARS and STAR TREK by Tom Whalen!

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Today, Tom Whalen makes his Mondo debut with two new posters for Star Trek and Star Wars. We present to you, Journey to Babel and Palace!

Poster by Tom Whalen. 18″x 24″ screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 260. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. Click HERE to buy.

From Tom:

“When given the opportunity to illustrate a poster for “Journey to Babel”, the classic episode of “Star Trek: The Original Series”, I wanted to bring to it a vibrant, clean design sense that evoked the retro/future vision of the show. From the gallery of alien delegates to the hierarchy of Mr. Spock’s family, the episode provided an abundance of visuals for me to work with.”

Journey To Babel is probably in my top five Trek episodes ever. I’m a huge fan of aliens and monsters, so the scene where all of the ambassadors are congregating in the mess hall on the enterprise is like Valhalla for me. It’s not unlike Jabba’s Palace with all of the unique characters hanging out and interacting with each other. This episode was also special as it introduced us to Spock’s parents Amanda and Sarek. Down the road, in the animated Star Trek, the episode called Yesteryear references this episode and tells the tale of Spock and his pet Selhat. Highly recommended.

Poster by Tom Whalen. 17.5″x 26″ screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 260. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. Click HERE to buy.

Tom weighs in on the design:

“The scenes in Jabba’s palace perfectly encapsulate the dense, alien-rich texture of “Star Wars” that completely hooked me as a kid and continue to inspire my work today.

I remember sitting in the theater as a 9 year-old and being completely blown away by the sheer variety of spectacles in the palace; the jade-skinned slave girl, the tiny scavenger turned fan-boy, the worm-like translator, one of our heroes hung as a trophy and, of course the bloated slug crime lord and his twisted, maniacal pet.
I see my poster as a sort of family portrait of this collection of miscreants taken shortly before they met their demise.”
Like Tom, the Palace scene in Jedi was a HUGE deal for me and still is. I remember sitting with my Guide to the Star Wars Universe book in my lap rewinding and pausing the scene trying to figure out who was who on several occasions. Jabba and Salacious are amazing characters and even more impressive knowing the puppetry and skill that went into bringing them alive.
Good luck with today’s release and if you’ve ordered from us earlier in the week, please note that we’d be happy to combine shipping with those orders. Simply put your order number from the previous order into the comments section when checking out and we’ll take care of the rest.

New Posters Galore From Ryan, Kelly, Moss, Taylor! On Sale Now!

Friday, October 15th, 2010

If there were an All Star team for poster making, these dudes would be in the starting line up. We have releases from Jay Ryan, Rich Kelly, Olly Moss and Ken Taylor. Read on for info!

Poster by Jay Ryan. 18″x 24″ screen print. Signed and numbered by Jay. Edition of 250. Click HERE to buy.

Jay Ryan printed this at The Bird Machine and hand signed and numbered them. The printing, as always, is top notch and features two different metallic inks on the helmet.

Poster by Rich Kelly. 18″x 24″ screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 200. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. Click HERE to buy.

Rich Kelly really went all out with this. As iconic as Maria is, most METROPOLIS posters feature her and we thought that we could do something different with this. Also, the entirety of the text on the poster is in German.

Poster by Olly Moss. 16″x 24″ screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 200. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. Click HERE to buy.

Overture came to us after seeing the work Olly did on the Roadshow poster series and asked for him by name. As you can see, he did not disappoint. Olly worked in a lot of ideas on this poster including the fangs on the title and the coolest part…the morse code with the bite marks. A lot of people were asking during Fantastic Fest and the morse code translates out to “kiss.”

Poster by Olly Moss. 16″x 24″ screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 95. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. Click HERE to buy.

Olly was pulling double duty at Fantastic Fest this year as he provided an official poster for the Quentin Dupieux (Mr. Oizo) film RUBBER. Fact: This movie is AMAZING and so is the poster. Also available in a green variant available HERE.

Poster by Ken Taylor. 24″x 36″ screen print w/ glow in the dark ink. Hand numbered. Edition of 190. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. Click HERE to buy.

Last but not least, we have Ken Taylor on POLTERGEIST. We had an outdoor screening of this last night here in Austin, TX and I found myself looking at the screen and then looking back at the poster checking the accuracy of the tree, house, clouds, etc. and let me say, Ken did his homework. Plus, the orange glows in the dark on this poster!
