Steamboat Willie On Sale Now!

Friday, February 25th, 2011

In association with Sideshow Collectibles and Disney, we present to you, Tom Whalen’s STEAMBOAT WILLIE!

Poster by Tom Whalen. 18″ x 24″ screen print with metallic inks. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. Hand numbered. Edition of 200. Click HERE to buy.

We are huge fans of Disney…HUGE. So, when we were talking about what poster we should release to announce the beginning of the series, Steamboat was the first one that came to mind. Yes, TRON came out before Willie, but Willie was always intended to be the poster to lead off the series. We hope you all like it and assure you that we have some cool things on the horizon with Disney and Sideshow.

P.S. Sideshow will have a variant Steamboat Willie print available in the near future.

And The Grammy Goes To….Rob Jones!

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Last Sunday, the Grammy’s were held in Los Angeles. Most of you probably watched Cee Lo hanging out with puppets and Lady Gaga getting REALLY into Easter, but earlier in the day, something much more amazing happened. Rob Jones is one of the three people that are behind Mondo and when he’s not art directing posters for us, he’s designing stuff for Jack White on his multiple ventures. We found out late last year that he was nominated for a Grammy for designing the UNDER THE GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS box set. We were really excited and every time we would talk about him we would joke and call him “Grammy Nominated Rob Jones.” Well, now, it’s Grammy Award Winning Rob Jones. Click this link to watch him win the award. It’s among the best acceptance videos I’ve ever seen.

BTW, did you see his suit! He had it custom made in pink leather after the Elvis Comeback Special suit. The photographers on the red carpet were loving it and so was Rob. Check out some of these insane pictures from the red carpet. Truly epic stuff.

Rob should’ve seriously won another Grammy for having the most fun. He’s so obviously enjoying himself in those pictures. Congrats Rob. You really deserve it!

The ABC’s Of David Lynch’s Dune

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

I love David Lynch’s DUNE a lot. I like it so much that I try to buy merchandise from it’s original release whenever possible(next time you’re in the Austin store, check out the Sandworms). That being the case, I frequently troll eBay for DUNE merchandise and was lucky enough recently to have bought a Sardaukar Laser blaster still MIB and an original terminology sheet from the theatrical release of the movie. The first time I watched DUNE, I did so without ever reading the book, so I was completely lost. I felt like I was in college again trying to follow a professors lecture. At one point, I think I was actually taking notes trying to keep things straight. Apparently, a lot of people in 1984 hadn’t read the book either and were TOTALLY confused as to what a Gom Jabbar was, so in an attempt to give theater goers a crash course on Dune, the studio made this terminology sheet and sent it to theaters so they could give it out to people seeing the film. I honestly have no idea how much it would’ve helped being in the dark, but it exists and I’m happy to have grabbed one.

If you’ve never read the book and have yet to watch the movie, I scanned the sheet for you. Maybe you could print it out and keep it handy and relive what the 1984 theatrical experience would’ve been like.

I don’t think I was born when DUNE came out, so if any of you saw it theatrically and actually got one of these sheets in the theater, let me know in the comments. I love hearing about stuff like this.

Mondo Changes: We Got New Tubes

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

We are going to start using new tubes to ship your posters. Why would we do that? Well, we were tired of seeing stuff like this:

Given, the above picture is a VERY extreme example of damage, but we’ve just had enough. As you all saw, December was a CRAZY month for releases and we were shipping a lot of pieces just like everyone else in the world. The USPS was swamped and because of that, they used crazier machines to sort the mail and it messed up a lot of our tubes in the process. We always take care of people when stuff like that happens, but it’s still a bummer to buy something and for it to arrive messed up. So, in January, we researched other tube options and finally settled with Yazoo Mills. We started using them with the HELLBOY orders, so you all should be seeing them soon. To show you the difference, I snapped some pictures at the shop. The difference is pretty clear. Let’s look, shall we….

OVERALL TUBE SIZE IS BIGGER

The new Yazoo Mills tubes are about an inch longer than the old Uline tubes. This will allow us to use the paper we’ve been using without it scrunching on the ends like it sometimes did before.

CAPS WON’T POP OFF ANYMORE

Uline tubes had the metal caps that would pop off if intense pressure was applied. Yazoo’s tubes have caps that sit inside of the tube. They also have a ribbed design that makes it pretty hard to pull off. We will also be taping the ends like we used to, so the probability of the end caps popping off on these is much lower.

TUBE WALL IS THICKER

Uline Tube

Yazoo Mills Tube

Not much to say here as the pictures say a lot about how much beefier the Yazoo Mills tubes are. We’re confident that this is going to solve a lot of shipping damage problems, but if you do get something dinged from the USPS, let us know and we will take care of you. If you buy a poster from us, you deserve to get a pristine copy of it. Let us know what you think of the change!

We’ve Been Framed: Star Wars

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Today’s “We’ve Been Framed” comes from Tom who was lucky enough to grab the entire Star Wars series, all of which were purchased directly from Mondo. Tom already had an epic collection of Star Wars collectibles which he coupled with the posters to create an insanely cool display.

Bounty Hunters

“My office has gradually turned into a “Star Wars museum” and a lot of my friends and coworkers stop by to check it out every now and then and see what’s new–and sometimes bring their kids or grandkids with them. It makes for a fun work environment, and it inspires creativity and imagination to sit and look around at such a variety of styles from all of my favorite poster artists. Each artist brought something unique to the series and it was fun seeing them all put their own personal spin on the Star Wars universe.”

Luke and Ben

When asked if he had a favorite from the series, Tom said:

“It would be pretty tough to pick one as the “best” of the series because there are so many great artists to choose from–but if I had to choose a personal favorite, it would be Martin Ansin’s “Wretched Hive.” The work he did on that piece was exceptional, and the metallic variant probably stands out as my favorite single poster from the series. It continues to stop me in my tracks when I walk by and it’s one that I can just stare at and admire over and over again. The sets from Taylor, Moss and Stout all display well together, but my favorite single standalone piece is the one by Ansin.”

Be sure to check out the complete set of photos HERE. Thanks for sharing your amazing home office with us Tom!
