Tickets will go ON SALE for the very first MONDO MYSTERY MOVIE at noon CST today. What is MMM? Let me tell you.
The MMM will be a new screening series at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in which we at Mondo pick out a beloved movie and make a poster for it. You might be thinking, “Don’t they already do that?” The answer is, “Yes, Kinda.” You see, we always announce what we’re doing ahead of time, but for these screenings, it will be top secret. Nobody knows what’s going on except for Mondo and the artist and nothing will be revealed until everyone in the theater is seated. If you look at the blog post below this one, you’ll see how we surprised everyone at the New Bev last night with the KILL BILL prints. We’re hoping to recapture that kind of excitement and electricity with the Mystery screenings.
There will be a lot of questions so I’ll answer some of them now. Could it be a vintage movie? Yeah. Could it be a new movie? Definitely. Could it be a marathon? Sure. Will there be special guests in attendance? That’s definitely a possibility. Bottom line is…we have the power to show ANYTHING we want. Anything. It will never be the same and that is what’s so much fun about this event. We’ll be showing you movies we LOVE and also doing posters for said movies in an ultra limited run that will ONLY be available at the screening.
You must have a ticket to the show to be able to buy the poster. Phone orders, walk ups, etc. won’t be accepted. This is for the fans that come out to the screening and for them only. If there are any posters left in the run after the screening, they will be put away into our archives. Think about what Disney does with their DVDs except we mean it. Print runs will always vary, but let me tell you that we will only have 100 for sale of MMM #1′s poster plus a few variants. Please allow me to be blunt…you will want this poster. You just will. Have I ever lied to you before?
If you’re in Austin, come and check out the movie. Even if you don’t buy the poster, you’ll get to see a great movie (and it is good as all the films we play will be) and you’ll be helping Japan out as we’re donating all ticket sales to the Japan relief. We were there a week before the disaster and feel like we need to help with things as everyone in that country was INCREDIBLY nice to us.
To buy tickets, click HERE and remember…. 1 show, 100 posters, 1 chance to buy them.

P.S. Just a little disclaimer, purchasing a ticket doesn’t reserve a poster for you. There will be a strict one per person rule like always, but a ticket purchase gives you entrance into the movie we’re showing and the CHANCE to buy a poster after. We have 100 for sale plus a few variants and the theater may hold more than 100. Just a warning.
About three weeks ago, we got a call from Quentin Tarantino’s team asking us if we would be interested in doing a poster for not only the first public screening of QT’s reassembled opus, KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR, but for a surprise at his birthday screening! Of course, we obliged and yesterday we revealed this masterful work by Tyler Stout!
I was throwing out some pretty vague hints, but after word got out that it was Tyler doing the poster, the situation got crazy outside of the theater. Fans were posting craigslist ads asking for people to go down to the theater to buy them and there were even lines outside of the theater to buy the poster running parallel to the lines to get in. Check it out….
Thanks for everyone that came out to tried to get one. We talked to some people that drove all the way from San Diego! If you didn’t snag one yesterday, don’t worry. We’ll have an online sale soon and as always, you will be notified the day before.
It was incredibly fun seeing the excitement from everyone when they realized we were in LA selling these. I love surprises and we are going to have one for our Austin fans very soon. I can’t go too much into it now, but in mid-April, we will be starting our own screening series at the Alamo called the Mondo Mystery Movie…. you will want to attend….
We announced this back at SXSW, but decided to do a little more in depth look at the game on the blog. When our friend Jason Eisener mentioned he wished there was a HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN game, we set forth to make that dream a reality. Using games like DOUBLE DRAGON 2, RIVER CITY RANSOM and FINAL FIGHT as inspiration, we teamed up with Alamo Drafthouse and Game Salad to create a side scrolling 8-bit NES style bloodbath for the iPhone.
We also put together a full-sized cabinet version of the game for the SXSW premiere of the film.

More levels, enemies and bosses will be made available as free updates leading up to the film’s release May 6. We’re planning to release the game’s soundtrack on the website as well. And look for the brutal Jeff Proctor HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN poster to go on sale this week.
Hobo with a Shotgun: The Game is available here. (Note: It requires iOS 3.0 or higher and is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, 3rd and 4th Generation iPod touch and all models of iPad)
Today, we are releasing the poster that took well over 80 hours to produce… Ken Taylor’s SUCKER PUNCH! This is the first in our Zack Snyder Director Series, so you know what that means…posters are coming for LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS, 300, DAWN OF THE DEAD, and WATCHMEN!
In case you haven’t looked at TV, newspapers, sides of buses or the internet in the last six months, let us tell you that SUCKER PUNCH comes out today and we highly recommend going to check it out. Let us know what you think and good luck on snagging a poster!

We were fortunate enough to work with some amazing artists to produce posters for select movies at SXSW 2011. These were offered to attendees at the fest at our Austin location, but we didn’t forget about our online fans. We made sure to hold onto a few of each poster for everyone that couldn’t make it down to Austin and today, we are releasing them into the wild. There are only a small quantity of each poster left, so good luck!

Todd worked his ass off on these and we think it really shows. These are some of the most detailed posters we’ve ever released. These will take a bit longer to ship out because of SXSW, so please be patient. We’ll announce via Twitter when they begin shipping.
We’re pleased to announce Drafthouse Films’ first DVD release, FOUR LIONS ! You can get your copy online right here or, if you’re in Austin, we highly recommend coming to the release party at the Alamo Village tonight. Not only is it your last chance to see the film on the big screen, but we’ll be raffling off t-shirts and a few copies of the Olly Moss / Jon Contino poster (and selling the DVD, of course).
When Roman wrote to share the posters in his home, we were blown away. He has one of the most extensive Mondo collections we’ve seen. He talks a little about his assemblage below.
“Rather than having one favorite I have three. Each for their own different reasons. When it comes to sheer artistry you truly have to appreciate Aaron Horkey’s Dead Man. The detail in the lettering is a thing of beauty. I keep that one in my bedroom since it’s comforting to see it before I go to bed in artificial light and in the sunlight first thing in the morning.”
“For personal and nostalgic reasons, the Cinemania is one of my other favorites. I think that’s the first Alamo poster I remember seeing. It was one of 3 with a Better Off Dead and a Warriors (damn, I wish I had that one, too!). A friend and I planned a couple of weeks for that weekend that never happened, but the aftermath was just as sweet and we got to meet Michael Beck (Swan) from The Warriors. Also, I have become a bit of a nut on the history of the Alamo, and this makes for a great piece in that history.”
“I do have to say that the poster I have probably studied the most is the There Will Be Blood from this past year’s Rolling Roadshow; not only because I love Olly Moss and the film itself, but because of how beautifully simple and powerful the image is. I don’t think I have ever seen a poster of any kind that with one simple object manages to completely sum up the conflicting forces in a film.”
“On a side note, for those that do not know, good framing does not have to be super expensive. Yes, some of your favorite works, like my True Grit, Cinemania and Dead Man, deserve that 3 figure treatment, but each of those pieces are a treasure and deserve to be protected. I work with Lee Avalone at the Hobby Lobby on 183 and Lamar for each of my pieces. She has really helped me to get the bang for my buck and anyone local would be doing themselves and their art a great favor in looking her up. Plus, she has an art degree… Many of these are protected for the long term by just having a great advisor to help you make good choices that fit your budget.
Anyone can feel free to send me questions about any of this via the comments section, I’ll give all the advice I can. I hate to see great pieces get destroyed because they’re exposed to variations of heat and moisture.”
Thanks to Roman for taking the time to share his vast collection + tips on framing!
If you’d like to have your posters featured on the blog, please send your pictures (at least 700px wide) to Justin (at) MondoTees.com.
If you don’t live in Austin, you may have missed the Mondo feature in the current March-April Alamo Guide. In it, Justin talks about his typical day, how we decide which projects to work on, licensing agreements, and what we have planned for the future of Mondo.
