THERE WILL BE BLOOD Detail Shots

Tomorrow we will conclude our week-long tribute to Paul Thomas Anderson with a set of posters for his 2007 film ‘THERE WILL BE BLOOD.’ Artist Aaron Horkey curated this entire series, assigning out films to artists he felt would be a perfect match. He saved his favorite film for himself. Aaron had this to say about TWBB:

“A few years ago, when a potential PTA director’s series was first mentioned, I immediately had my hand up for this one. Everything about TWBB is precisely my cup of tea – the time period, the sweeping desolation of the landscape, the soundtrack, Daniel Day-Lewis, etc. I didn’t immediately come to the idea of an over-sized stock certificate but the more thought that went into it the more perfect it seemed as a visual embodiment of the film. I’ve also wanted to go all-in on something resembling a 19th century engraved note for quite some time so this seemed like as good an excuse as any. All told I spent over 100 hours on the illustration – it’s still only about half as involved as I think it should be but after 6 weeks I felt like it needed to be put to bed. The aging of the paper is something I’m pretty proud of here – there are 3 layers of very subtle tone built up from the paper color to approximate a century old piece of acidic, weathered stock.

This was my first large scale curatorial project – it was much more work than I had anticipated but the end result is something I’m incredibly proud of. It’s been great to see the series come to life and I’d like to thank Mondo for the opportunity, especially Mitch Putnam for helping me with logistics and general organization. Also, thanks to Paul Thomas Anderson for being open to the project and of course all the artists involved – everyone came through brilliantly and certainly salvaged the project before I had a chance to run it into the ground.”

Due to the demand for this print, we are only allowing customers to buy a regular OR a variant. Not Both.

If you have any comments or questions please e-mail us at store@mondotees.com, and please remember to save your combined shipping requests until after the sale tomorrow. Thanks!

MAGNOLIA Detail Shots

Tomorrow we hit day three of our week-long celebration of Paul Thomas Anderson’s filmography with prints for his third and fourth films, MAGNOLIA and PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE.

BOOGIE NIGHTS and THERE WILL BE BLOOD get most of the love, but there’s a special place in my heart for MAGNOLIA and PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. One is a drama about cancer, child abuse and loneliness at a little under three hours long. The other is a breezy, romantic and often very funny (albeit tense) film. Joao and Jordan did a terrific job of capturing those energies and I love the stark difference of these two prints side by side. Aaron Horkey, who curated the series, had this to say about the artists and his choice to assign them to these particular films:

MAGNOLIA by Joao Ruas

“I’d been watching Joao’s incredible progression from the moment he was tapped to follow cover artist James Jean on DC’s Fables series – I don’t know if anyone expected shoes that massive to be filled so effortlessly but here he was, voracious in his experimentation and so consistent in his victories as to thoroughly belie his years. Ruas has grown over the years into an absolute favorite of mine and I was thrilled that he was willing to take part in this series. His Magnolia poster (which is, I believe, his first screen print) is in my eyes a perfectly balanced illustration – hauntingly stark yet deceptively detailed and a palette over which to salivate. That he was able to distill such a dense narrative into these simple forms is truly something to wonder over – I feel absolutely cro-magnon in it’s presence, more so than usual. And that title lettering – total perfection.”

PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE by Jordan Crane

“Just hearing the title of this movie made me think of Jordan – taken out of context it fits right in with his staggering output of comics, anthologies and children’s book. I’ve stood awe-struck in front of a wall plastered with his amazing screen prints, have been reading his work since his groundbreaking Non anthology and, like a good portion of the population, still don’t understand how the Hell he made the Maps and Legends dust jacket, so it was not a huge leap to think this could be a winner. Knowing he’s more than capable with a squeegee as well as with a forlorn narrative it was a relief to hear he was on board and the final poster is a fantastic addition to the series.”

Note: We did not have Jordan Crane’s PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE in time to take detailed photography in time for this post. We will post photos when they arrive.

All of these have been approved by P.T. Anderson himself. The series concludes Friday with THERE WILL BE BLOOD by Aaron Horkey.

These posters will be available Thursday, May 16th, at a randome time at www.mondotees.com Please follow us on Twitter for the on sale announcement.

BOOGIE NIGHTS Detail Shots

This week we are hosting a week-long celebration of Paul Thomas Anderson’s filmography. We continue tomorrow with Rockin’ Jelly Bean’s print for PTA’s second film, and breakout hit, BOOGIE NIGHTS.

This is Rockin’ Jelly Bean’s first poster for Mondo. With RJB, as with most artists we have always wanted to work with, we just needed the right project to bring him into the mix. It wasn’t until this series, when we were introduced by Aaron Horkey (who curated the entire series,) that we realized it had been staring us in the face the whole time. Aaron had this to say about working with RJB:

“This poster was destined to be handled by RJB – anyone even marginally familiar with his style and subject matter would have to agree that he’s been seemingly working up to this one for years. When I initially reached out (thanks to Pushead for the introduction) his auto-translated response boiled down to, “Rollergirl is my inspiration!” After that point all bets were of and the finished product is precisely what an RJB Boogie Nights poster should be – glistening, dynamic and damn near dripping off the paper.”

All of these prints have been approved by P.T. Anderson himself. The series continues Thursday with MAGNOLIA by Joao Ruas and PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE by Jordan Crane.

If you are going after multiple posters in the series, we ask that you please hold all combined shipping requests until the series concludes on Friday.

HARD EIGHT Detail Shots

This Tuesday through Friday, we will be hosing a week long celebration of Paul Thomas Anderson’s filmography. We start tomorrow with Rich Kelly’s print for his first film HARD EIGHT (or as it is better known to some, SYDNEY.)

This series was curated by an artist who is no stranger to us, Aaron Horkey. But since a few of these names may be new to some of you, Aaron took time to detail his decision making process and how he came to choose each particular artist for their specific project.

“I met Rich a few years ago when he was living in Chicago – he had only just started out on his phenomenal run of posters, but he was already light years ahead of the pack. Looking through his sketchbook was a fucking revelation – I can honestly say that book was up there with Crumb, Ware and Jean in terms of sheer brilliance and natural ability. When this curatorial project was taking shape I knew I wanted non-Mondo regulars to round it out, but Kelly was the obvious exception to the rule – his beautifully nuanced illustrative style was just the thing for capturing the gritty noir of Anderson’s first film and I was over the moon when he agreed to take part. Even in the rough initial stages I could tell I made the right choice – another absolute stunner of a composition to add to his growing portfolio of classic pieces, the kid wins again…”

All of these prints have been approved by P.T. Anderson himself. We have been working on this project for quite some time, so we are very excited to finally share them with you.

ARMY OF DARKNESS, EVIL DEAD 2 and MONDONOMICON On Sale Info!

Tomorrow, along with ARMY OF DARKNESS, we will be selling a brand new print for EVIL DEAD 2 by Jason Edmiston. We weren’t able to get these photographed in time for tomorrow’s sale, but we will post photos as soon as we have them. They are going to look great. It is an 8-color screen print.

Also, we will be releasing our third Mondo book, appropriately titled MONDONOMICON. This time around, instead of being only comprised of old prints and a nice leather cover (it has that, too), we have done a little something extra. Screen printed in blood-red across the backs of every print are an assortment of images from “dead” projects. No blank pages in this book. You’ll find 16 previously unused designs in every book.

You can see some examples below of our “Book of the Dead,” followed by detail shots for ARMY OF DARKNESS by Randy Ortiz.
