Way back in March, I announced that we had commissioned Jon Vermilyea to produce artwork for the 2009 Fantastic Fest poster. Every year, the Fantastic Fest programmers go all out attempting to bring you things that you’ve never seen before. To me, the poster should be no different. With monsters being the theme this year, we set out to do something we’ve never attempted before. Instead of having a poster with the normal 2 dimensions that you are all accustomed to, we thought, “Why not up the ante and make it 3?!” Here we are…the day has come…I can’t wait any longer…Behold! This year’s 3D FANTASTIC FEST POSTER!
What do you all think? I can tell you that when I first saw the linework for the poster I said “shit” really loud. When I saw this final with color, I said something much worse.
Many of you might be asking, “Well, if it’s 3D, where are all the red and blue lines?” You will find none of that here. We used a very special process called Chromadepth. With your poster you will receive a pair of glasses. The special specks react with the colors and stretch the image to make it 3 dimensional. You can read more about the process here, but essentially, warm colors shoot out at you and cooler colors fall back into the background. If you have 3D Chromadepth glasses with you right now, feel free to put them on and take a gander. If not, feel free to stop in at the Mondo shop anytime and ask to use ours.
Not only did Jon destroy the poster, he did an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT image for the shirt.
So there you have it. This is just a taste of what you can expect from Fantastic Fest this year. We will no doubt have more announcements and surprises for you soon, so stay tuned. The Fantastic Fest poster and shirt will be on sale at Mondo soon!
-Justin
P.S. If you can’t wait to get your hands on the Fantastic Fest shirt from Jon Vermilyea, you can order a DEADLY SPAWN shirt right now! The last run sold out quick so we brought it back in two new colorways…black and slime!
If you don’t know who Frank Henenlotter is, click HERE right now. If you’re into horror movies, you’ll love him as this guy was killing it in the 80′s. Literally.
Today’s murder Monday is from BRAIN DAMAGE.
Anyone recognize the voice of Aylmer the drug pushing alien? It’s horror host Zacherley!
Henenlotter also did cool things like cross characters over from his other movies. For instance, you can see the man holding the basket from BASKET CASE riding the subway in BRAIN DAMAGE. Never seen BASKET CASE? Well, here’s a clip dubbed in Italian:
(If anyone knows if this prop still exists, get ahold of me. No joke, I’ll pay whatever you want for it.)
Check Henenlotter’s movies out. You won’t be disappointed.
I’m sure that most of the people that read this blog have already seen DRAG ME TO HELL. Word on the street(street changed its name to internet a long time ago) is that Mr. Raimi has made his triumphant return to directing horror. Without any debate or question, he is a GREAT director, but I think he needs to get more respect as an actor. He has really become kind of a Dick Miller type of guy with me. I love it when I’m watching something and he’s a newscaster or a security guard or someting.
So, in this speical Raimi Edition of Murder Monday, I thought I’d show you some of the best non-Raimi directed deaths involving the man of honor. Come on…It’d be way too easy for me to go on youtube, type in EVIL DEAD and pull off all of the best kills from the trilogy and put them in here. That’s just lazy though, right?
First up is one of my favorite horror movies…INTRUDER. Sure, this kill isn’t so hot because it cuts away, but you later get to see him hanging from the hook. There are lots of great kills in this movie though. Seriously, if anyone knows Scotty Spiegel, please let him know that there is a dude in Austin, TX that is obsessed with his career. Besides directing INTRUDER, he wrote and directed the best FROM DUSK TIL DAWN film in the series (2), co-wrote EVIL DEAD 2 with Raimi and even wrote the insanely under appreciated Lustig jam, HIT LIST. I love you, Scotty!
Next we have MILLER’S CROSSING. I love this scene even though the audio is WAY out of synch in this clip:
And last but certainly not least, a movie that I urge you to rent, order or borrow immediately…STRYKERS REVENGE aka THOU SHALT NOT KILL…EXCPEPT! This movie is so great! It’s by far Sam’s best performance and without a doubt his best death scene. Luckily, whoever posted this clip included every scene from the movie with Raimi in it, so it’s like the Castle Films version of TSNK…E!
Almost forgot about the Murder Monday post, but I’ve got my priorities in order. To kind of apologize for my tardiness, I’m going to give you like 175 murders in one post instead of just one measly murder.
If you haven’t seen MANIAC COP 2 because it isn’t on DVD, quit being a lazy jerk and go find the VHS copy and watch it. It’s WAAAAY better than the first MANIAC COP and MC1 is pretty hard to top. I’m not going to write about why you should watch this…the tasty clip above speaks for itself.
Three years ago at a comic book convention in Kansas City, KS I met Robert Z’ Dar and he invited me back to his hotel room to drink wine with him. I don’t remember the circumstances, but I had to turn him down…that has seriously been my only regret up to this point in life.
If the above clip doesn’t make you want to see this movie, the MANIAC COP rap over the end credits definitely will…ENJOY!
When we paired one of our favorite movies with one of our favorite artists (Jon Vermilyea), we had no idea that this shirt would’ve came to be so nuts! One of the best movies you’ve never heard of, THE DEADLY SPAWN has one of the BEST looking monsters in movie history. Now you can wear this eating machine and spread the word. Available now in Asphalt and Eggplant, wear this to the next horror convention and stand above the rest.
Here is the trailer to THE DEADLY SPAWN:
And speaking of horror conventions, I attended Texas Frightmare a few weekends ago and got my picture taken with Dick Miller. Coincidentally, I was wearing the new DEADLY SPAWN shirt so you can get a good look of it in action!

P.S. Fuck it…why not? I like this movie so much that I actually got it tattooed on me. It’s an obsession!
It is on, world! The Van Dam is packed to the max with prints, we’ve got the route chosen and we are coming for you! (That kinda sounded like a pro wrestling intro…I’m into that. ) Seriously, we’re rolling out of town in a few hours. Even though the first screening of the two week west coast tour doesn’t happen until the 16th, our blog coverage starts today. Be sure to check us on Twitter because we’ll be updating constantly AND be sure to bookmark this blog as we will have a new update for you at least once a day. Oh, and for you people lucky enough to make it to the show, we have some new goodies that you are going to get first crack at.
First up is the NEVER FORGET memorial VHS shirt in fluorescent blue, pink and yellow. This comes packaged in a plastic clamshell with a commemorative black arm band holding everything together.
We also have our new DEADLY SPAWN shirt by 2009 Fantastic Fest poster artist, Jon Vermilyea. We got these in on Friday and today was the first day I didn’t wear it. These got printed on three different color shirts; black, gray and purple. Jon has all of his designs printed with translucent inks that mix to form a color and it really works amazingly well… especially with this shirt. It made it so the Spawn have a slimy quality to them. By far my favorite shirt right now.
That’s it for now, but wish us luck on the trip and stay tuned for more updates! You can find all of the info on the schedule by going to http://www.cinemapocalypse.blogspot.com/
I’ve done the math…today is exactly one week until the CINEMAPOCALYPSE! Early next week, Lars and Zack will be heading out with a van full of prints to the west coast for almost two weeks of non stop cinema madness. They’ll be starting off in LA and then traveling north up the coast to San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. If you live in any of those cities, be sure to come on out. There are many reasons why the Alamo is considered the best theater in the world and Lars and Zack are two of the biggest ones. You don’t want to miss this stuff (especially CARNIVAL MAGIC).
I’ll be traveling with them with lots of Mondo stuff including the IN-SANE event poster from Johnny Sampson. Johnny hand screened these himself and they are in the store right now. They look gorgeous in person. In addition, we’re going to have two new shirts that we are going to take on the tour which I will preview this upcoming Monday right here.
We also plan on keeping a daily blog of the crazy events that take place while we’re out on the road. Lars, Zack and I will all be writing on it keeping you up on what’s going on. I’m also going to be going Twitpic crazy, so sign up to our twitter account: www.twitter.com/mondonews
Don’t know enough about Don King? Did you know that he’s known for “Givin’ out turkeys smack dab in the hood?” I didn’t either. Watch this informative rap video about Don King and get your learn on.
Alamo Drafthouse superstars Lars Nilsen and Zack Carlson are taking a slew of classic exploitation films on the road for ‘Cinemapocalypse’. Johnny Sampson brings the apocalyptic terror with this 18″ x 24″ screenprint. Signed and numbered.
