This year, a movie played at Fantastic Fest that did what dozens of other movies tried to do, but ultimately failed…THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL is a movie that harkens back to the days of when movies were released on those little plastic rectangles. Ti West made a movie that delivers the goods and I’m ecstatic that it is opening at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar tomorrow.Check out the trailer:
Oh and by the way, it stars exploitation legends Mary Woronov and Tom Noonan! Check out tickets and showtimes HERE.
This year was a very memorable Fantastic Fest, but one of the most exciting things for us was producing the sword that was given to Jess Franco for his Lifetime Achievement award. Lars had came to us earlier in festival planning and said he wanted to do something very special for Jess. Most awards are bogus. Plaques…lame. Trophies…boring. Oscar statues…yeccch! Who needs em?! We both agreed that the only way to go would be to make a mighty sword to present Jess on his big day.
Lars and I looked at hundreds of sword examples online. We considered styles of swords ranging from Conan’s Atlantean sword to the friggin Tri-Blade, but we decided on a simple, more noble alternative. We decided to go with the weapon a knight would yield. We also based the grip of the sword on Thor’s hammer Mjolnir. The criss crossing lethers and embedded studs gave it a great texture as well as an awesome look. The Fantastic Fest pommel was created by Jim Rogers who also sculpted our Demon Scourge ring. Jim has now become our go to guy for all things metal. Maybe everyone in Spain should pitch in to commission Jim to make a gigantic bronze statue of Jess. He deserves it!
We are packed with cool new products for sale today. If you weren’t in Austin for Fantastic Fest, now is your chance to grab these goodies!
Tonight, we are having our first ever live screen printing show called HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER with artist Jon Vermilyea in attendance. We will be letting people design their own t-shirts in store and decided that we would extend the offer to our online fanbase as well. Below is a preview of what you can expect at the show!
Mix and match the monster heads and bodies to create your own one of a kind t-shirt. This is only going to be available until 9:30pm CST, so don’t let this chance slip by!
Next up is the GORGEOUS David D’Andrea ANTICHRIST poster that was made specially for Fantastic Fest 2009 this year.

In a few hours, I’m going to stop watching Fantastic Fest films long enough to go pick up Jon Vermilyea who will be our special guest tomorrow at HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER!

As Tim and I posted earlier this week, John Gholson has been on a quest to make it to Fantastic Fest. To raise funds, he has begun drawing pictures of whatever the hell you want. My request:
ALF AS A LEATHER DADDY!
I’ve been on a big Tom of Finland kick lately, plus I love ALF. I guess combining the two makes sense…? I love ALF so much that I will publicly announce to you all right now that I plan on getting an ALF tattoo within the next two months. After that, I’m pretty sure I could never get a “real” job ever again. Nobody wants to buy furniture from a dude with an ALF tattoo. Fact.
If you want John to draw you ANYTHING, go to his blog HERE and make a request.
We released the 2009 Fantastic Fest poster and t-shirt artwork to you about a week ago and the response was tremendous! Now we are offering the Fantastic Fest shirt in a limited edition colorway that will ONLY be available online HERE at MondoTees.com.
Limited to only 50 pieces worldwide, we hope this tides all of you rabid genre hounds over until this years festival.
Way back in March, I announced that we had commissioned Jon Vermilyea to produce artwork for the 2009 Fantastic Fest poster. Every year, the Fantastic Fest programmers go all out attempting to bring you things that you’ve never seen before. To me, the poster should be no different. With monsters being the theme this year, we set out to do something we’ve never attempted before. Instead of having a poster with the normal 2 dimensions that you are all accustomed to, we thought, “Why not up the ante and make it 3?!” Here we are…the day has come…I can’t wait any longer…Behold! This year’s 3D FANTASTIC FEST POSTER!
What do you all think? I can tell you that when I first saw the linework for the poster I said “shit” really loud. When I saw this final with color, I said something much worse.
Many of you might be asking, “Well, if it’s 3D, where are all the red and blue lines?” You will find none of that here. We used a very special process called Chromadepth. With your poster you will receive a pair of glasses. The special specks react with the colors and stretch the image to make it 3 dimensional. You can read more about the process here, but essentially, warm colors shoot out at you and cooler colors fall back into the background. If you have 3D Chromadepth glasses with you right now, feel free to put them on and take a gander. If not, feel free to stop in at the Mondo shop anytime and ask to use ours.
Not only did Jon destroy the poster, he did an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT image for the shirt.
So there you have it. This is just a taste of what you can expect from Fantastic Fest this year. We will no doubt have more announcements and surprises for you soon, so stay tuned. The Fantastic Fest poster and shirt will be on sale at Mondo soon!
-Justin
P.S. If you can’t wait to get your hands on the Fantastic Fest shirt from Jon Vermilyea, you can order a DEADLY SPAWN shirt right now! The last run sold out quick so we brought it back in two new colorways…black and slime!
I just went to Jon Vermilyea’s site and he has updated it with a brand new store that has about six or so incredible prints for sale. His Johnny Quasar stuff is definitely my favorite. Why haven’t vinyl figures been made of this stuff? I’m totally grabbing the MUDMAN print. He also has prints of the Mothman that he did for Fantagraphics’ BEASTS! BOOK 2 for sale.
I may have mentioned this in an earlier post or Twitter message or something, but Jon sent me early 2009 Fantastic Fest poster art yesterday. This poster is going to RAGE! Monsters gone wild!
