TRIPLE FEATURE #2: Terrifying TV Specials

Do they even make Halloween specials anymore? If so, I would probably only be disheartened if I watched them. Luckily it seems like copyright on this older stuff isn’t very strictly enforced so with the use of the internet the whole world can choose to ignore the vast cultural wasteland of (what I imagine to be) today’s contemptible or non-existent Halloween TV abortions and continue watching the good stuff like it’s 1985.

The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t
Dracula realizes that he and his cohorts aren’t very scary anymore and that due to their abundant fright-failures Halloween is in danger of being lost. This is like “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” but for monsters. The recently deceased, though fondly remembered, Henry Gibson shows up as Igor and Dracula is played by none other than Judd Hirsch. My VHS copy of this movie goes by the title “The Night Dracula Saved The World.” I like that one more because even though Dracula only saves the holiday, it seems to imply that without Halloween, the world would be entirely worthless.

Mr. Boogedy
Someone has lovingly uploaded a tape they recorded off of TV onto the Youtube so that everyone can share in the pleasures of this never-released-on-video-at-all staple of childhood Halloween watching. If you are around my age, chances are you saw this plenty. Especially memorable is John Astin (Gomez Addams) as the weird neighbor. Enjoy the nostalgia, or at least try to imagine like you saw it when you were 6 and manufacture yourself some warm and fuzzy memories. The equally unavailable sequel “Bride of Boogedy” is also floating out there somewhere on the tubes.

The Paul Lynde Halloween Special
This is it, guaranteed, your only chance to see Witchie Poo from H.R. Pufnstuf, Billy Barty and KISS all together on one show. And the festivities are presided over by that fabulous queen from Hollywood Squares Paul Lynde. Hard to believe and not be missed!

Lamour Supreme Solo Show @ Super 7

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Our good pal Lamour Supreme is having his first ever solo show this weekend at Super 7 in San Francisco. If you are out in SF, go to this. I promise you that it will be nuts. I can vouch for that. Lamour is a nice dude, but when it comes to vinyl toys (especially customs) he becomes a beast. Don’t believe me? Check out this custom I got from him a few months ago:

Here’s a few previews of things he’ll have at the show for sale.

He also did this killer shirt for Super 7 x Mishka that will be sold at the show:

Couple all of this crazy stuff with the fact that it’s almost Halloween. Rumor has it, that if you don’t come to the show dressed up, you won’t be able to buy anything. If you go this weekend, hit me up and tell me how it was!

Cinemapocalypse Was Great!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Wow!

Cinemapocalypse was IN-SANE! My first show ever at the Alamo Drafthouse was the Best of QT Fest so Saturday night brought back a whole lotta memories for me. One of my favorite moments of the night was getting to sit next to one of my favorite living actors, ROBERT FORSTER!

forster

In between movies we chatted about Wings Hauser, his hair loss and how he was pals with almost everyone in THE LOSERS. Truly nerdy stuff. Both of his Q&As were oustanding as well! If you ever meet him, ask him to do his Jon Huston impersonation. GOLDEN!

He came out as a special guest as we were showing VIGILANTE as part of the show.

Everything about VIGILANTE is PERFECT…especially the score which I found HERE. Vulcan and I Luv Video have this for rent in the Austin area. You can buy it on Amazon and it’s for rent on Netflix. However you swing it, SEE THIS MOVIE!

P.S. In case you were wondering, the full line up of CINEMAPOCALYPSE was:

New Troll 2 Shirt Debuts At Brooklyn Screening Tonight!

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Dear Brooklyn,

This is your pal Justin from Mondo in Austin, TX. Just a heads up, TROLL 2 and BEST WORST MOVIE are playing in your town tonight and tomorrow as part of the Rooftop Films series. You can find all information and tickets here. I’m not gonna lie and say “It’s almost sold out. Better hurry!” because I’m really not sure if it is or not, but based on everywhere else this movie plays, it does sell out…so I guess you better hurry and get tickets if you want to go. Better safe than sorry.

Not only will these movies be playing, but select cast members will be there including star of TROLL 2 and director of BEST WORST MOVIE Michael Stephenson.

If that isn’t enough, we will be debuting our brand new TROLL 2 shirt at the show and giving you all a chance to be the first to buy it!

comic-con-001

As I’m sure you all know, San Diego Comic Con went down last week. Terror Tuesday’s Zack Carlson and I attended and made it a point to stay away from Hall H at all costs. (Hall H is the place where everyone goes to watch like 3 minutes ot TWILIGHT and stuff like that…no thanks.) We bought hundreds of pounds of comics, lots of toys and lots of bootlegs. (Zack bought one featuring old timey love stories, but with all of the human characters replaced with dogs. Can’t find that in Hall H.) Here are some of the highlights from this years Con.

comic-con-006

We bought so many comics this year it should’ve been illegal. Zack’s bag alone weighed 115 pounds and that was just comics alone!

comic-con-007

And last but not least, definitely the best cover of all of the comics we bought this year: HANSI: THE GIRL WHO LOVED THE SWASTIKA! This is super fitting considering it’s unofficially “Nazi Killing” month at the Alamo. I also like the Al Hartley signature in the bottom right hand corner…it’s a straight rip of the way companies would advertise Jack Kirby being on a comic. I guess the only way this cover could’ve been better is if Kirby did it himself.

comic-con-014

What would Comic Con be without a trip to the Furries’ booth?!

comic-con-011

Adam West was also hung out for approximately 4 hours at the Con and as you can tell by the picture he graciously took with me, (he charged) he was psyched to be there! Don’t know if it reads in the picture, but that is a hat he’s wearing and it does say Adam West on it. I want!

comic-con-009

Probably my favorite part of the convention are the costumes and there were some CRAZY ones this year. This first one isn’t the best we saw, but it was the most confusing.

img_0473

This was a first for me…Blanka! Pretty genius.

comic-con-004

And there are a billion Superman costumes running around, but how many are fighting the Super Powers Lex Luthor?!

comic-con-012

I love it! The best five days of the year. Maybe Mondo will get wild next year and get a booth at the Con?

Behold! 2009 Fantastic Fest T-Shirt And Poster Art!

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Way back in March, I announced that we had commissioned Jon Vermilyea to produce artwork for the 2009 Fantastic Fest poster. Every year, the Fantastic Fest programmers go all out attempting to bring you things that you’ve never seen before. To me, the poster should be no different. With monsters being the theme this year, we set out to do something we’ve never attempted before. Instead of having a poster with the normal 2 dimensions that you are all accustomed to, we thought, “Why not up the ante and make it 3?!” Here we are…the day has come…I can’t wait any longer…Behold! This year’s 3D FANTASTIC FEST POSTER!

fantastic-fest-poster-copy

What do you all think? I can tell you that when I first saw the linework for the poster I said “shit” really loud. When I saw this final with color, I said something much worse.

Many of you might be asking, “Well, if it’s 3D, where are all the red and blue lines?” You will find none of that here. We used a very special process called Chromadepth. With your poster you will receive a pair of glasses. The special specks react with the colors and stretch the image to make it 3 dimensional. You can read more about the process here, but essentially, warm colors shoot out at you and cooler colors fall back into the background. If you have 3D Chromadepth glasses with you right now, feel free to put them on and take a gander. If not, feel free to stop in at the Mondo shop anytime and ask to use ours.

Not only did Jon destroy the poster, he did an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT image for the shirt.

ff-shirt-mock

So there you have it. This is just a taste of what you can expect from Fantastic Fest this year. We will no doubt have more announcements and surprises for you soon, so stay tuned. The Fantastic Fest poster and shirt will be on sale at Mondo soon!

-Justin

P.S. If you can’t wait to get your hands on the Fantastic Fest shirt from Jon Vermilyea, you can order a DEADLY SPAWN shirt right now! The last run sold out quick so we brought it back in two new colorways…black and slime!

This weekend is packed. Let’s Party!

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Hey You!

Put the Wii stick down, come out of your parents basement and step out into the light this weekend. There is SO much stuff going on this weekend here in Austin (and Houston). First, we have the massive NIGHT OF THE CREEPS reunion screening at the Ritz. If you haven’t got your tickets yet….OOPS! They’re all gone. There will be a poster for sale for the event, so you can still own a piece of greatness. (I’ve seen it…you’ll like it.)

Next, we have the ROT RALLY. I heard Robbie Knievel is going to jump multiple somethings in front of the Capital downtown. Robbie isn’t near as cool as his dad, but I watched his reality show and he jumps stuff for a living so he’s way cooler than any of us based on that fact alone.

knievel

MARK TODD is in the house this weekend (literally for me). He and his wife Esther Pearl Watson are going to be hanging out at Domy for their solo shows.

esthershow

Esther will be at Domy Austin Friday night.

markohman

Mark will be at the Houston Domy. I’ll be at both events with Mark’s Badasses print set and the Badass Cinema shirts he did for us. Come and hang out.
