MMMIX = Dawn Of The Dead w/ George Romero!

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Saturday was a dream come true for the Mondo team as we put on our ninth Mondo Mystery movie. This time, we screened the 1978 horror classic DAWN OF THE DEAD in a shopping mall with over 200 zombies and George Romero in attendance!

Arts and Labor were at the event and did a comprehensive video recap…. check it out!

To get the 200 zombies without spoiling the surprise, we put out a casting call and said that we were shooting a movie called LET THEM EAT….. BRAINS. The response was enormous and as a thank you to all of the zombies, we created a special poster for them. This was an exclusive run solely for the zombie extras so there will probably be little chance of these showing up in the wild!
Misdirection was a key to this event. Our fans are VERY SMART, and we wanted to make sure that no one figured it out. So, for MMMIX, we  threw a curveball and had everyone show up at a church 9 miles down the highway. We loaded everyone in charter buses, and they departed by motorcade escort to Highland Mall as soon as we got the cue that the mall was closed and all of their customers were off the premises.  When the buses arrived at the mall…they were greeted by the walking dead.
We hired our good pal Meredith from Hawgfly to do the FX on the show and it turned out great. Her team cranked out over 200 zombies in just over 4 hours which is astonishing. The fans had to fight their way through the zombie horde and into the mall. They had help by a small band of gunmen, but as you can see, the zombies made quick work of them and some of the fans….
Upon entering the mall, we announced the film and introduced the secret guest, George Romero! After the standing ovation died down, he started to tell a story about the production of DAWN until one of the zombies made his way down from the upper concourse. Luckily, George was packing and easily took care of the problem….
I guess if he created them, he can kill them, too.
We ended the night by announcing the amazing Jeff Proctor poster which took him over 3 weeks to complete. Every zombie from the film is included on the piece and is 100% approved by DAWN OF THE DEAD and Richard P. Rubinstein himself.
We’re very thankful for everyone’s hard work on the project and hope that fans had fun. We’re already working on the next Mystery Movie idea…. any guesses?

Mondo Mystery Movie IX Location Revealed!

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

We’re a little over a week out from MMM:IX, but we’re now ready to reveal information about the show. Below are some frequently asked questions about the festivities:

WHERE IS THE SHOW?

Riverbend Church
4214 North Capital of Texas Highway
Austin, TX 78746

Parking is free and you should enter the Church off of Cedar Street. You must bring your printed ticket with you.

WHAT TIME SHOULD I SHOW UP?

Please be there no later than 8:30pm. We are closing and LOCKING the doors at 9:30pm. If you’re not there by then, you will miss the show. Bring your printed ticket with you.

SHOULD I BRING A TUBE?

If you want to… sure. Please note though that the posters will all come in tubes.

DO I NEED TO BRING SOMETHING TO SIT ON?

No. We recommend not bringing any blankets, chairs, hammocks, etc. We will provide chairs for you to sit on. But bring your printed ticket.

SHOULD WE COME IN COSTUMES?

Sure! It is Halloween weekend and if you want to come dressed to impress, that would be awesome.

We also recommend that you pick up your tickets from the Alamo S. Lamar Box Office BEFORE the day of the show. You will need to show your physical paper ticket from the box office to get into the Mystery Movie at Riverbend Church. We must emphasize that if you do not have a ticket, you will not be admitted to the screening.

Also, like with all Mondo Mystery Movies, it is one poster per person and tickets are not refundable. For example, if you are one person and come and try to redeem six tickets for six posters…. THAT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. This has been a rock solid rule at all of the Mystery Movies thus far and will continue to be one at this one and all in the future.

If you have any questions, please either send us an email at Store@MondoTees.com or reply in the comments below. See you guys next weekend!

Earlier this week, we released tickets to Mondo Mystery Movie IX and tickets quickly sold out. As with all of the MMM shows, we don’t announce what the title of the film is until you get there, but some fans are trying to guess what it is….. and making their own posters for it…. with my face on them. These are TRULY amazing and hilarious, so check them out below.

P.S. Most terrifying is PULP FICTION and my fave is DIE HARD.

Mondo Mystery Movie IX Ticket Info

Friday, October 7th, 2011

As I write this, myself and half of Team Mondo are in Los Angeles preparing for this weekend’s first ever Mystery Movies and half of the team are back in Austin, TX putting the finishing touches on ticketing for Mondo Mystery Movie IX. I am very happy to announce that we will finally be putting tickets up for sale Monday at 2pm CST for the next and LAST Mondo Mystery Movie in Austin, TX this year.

Without exaggeration, this will be the BIGGEST MMM ever… so big in fact, that for the first time ever, we are breaking out of the theater setting and taking it out into the real world. The location will be a total secret until closer to the event, but keep a watchful eye on this blog and Twitter and we will let you know all of the details.

As always, we cannot divulge the name of the movie, but let me say that this is a show we have wanted to do for a very long time and until now, it was impossible to make it happen. The poster is all done and approved by the studio and you will definitely be putting it in a frame as a lot of you have been asking why we’ve never done a poster for this particular classic. The amount of work that has gone into this show is staggering and not only is it definitely one of the biggest Mondo has ever put on, it ranks up with one of the largest and epic shows that the Alamo has ever done, too.

Again, tickets will go on sale Monday, October 10th at 2pm. I will tweet out a link beforehand so you know where to go. There will be two types of tickets. Regulars will be $75 a piece and we will also be offering variant tickets where you will receive both posters. They will run you $200. If you have been wanting to come to a Mystery Movie in the past, this is your last chance as it will be the final Mystery Movie screening in Austin for 2011. We’re doing this on Halloween weekend and pulling out all of the stops and I promise that you will never forget what happens.

Mondo x Drew Struzan For Frankenstein Video Recap

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Last week, I was out in Los Angeles to have Drew Struzan sign the first ever screenprint of his work. The Frankenstein poster is the most elaborate thing we have ever done so we brought the crew of JUST LIKE BEING THERE out with us to film my time with Drew. What follows is a small look at Drew’s thoughts on Mondo, his career and an up close look at the poster….

We are also going to have a small offering of the Frankenstein prints for sale tomorrow in the store for Fantastic Fest attendees. Keep an eye on the blog in the morning and we’ll have more information for you.

We’re Bringing The Mondo Mystery Movie To LA!

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Let’s have a talk…. it’s good news, though. Promise.

We are very proud to announce that we will be teaming up with the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles to do posters for special events and screenings. We have been big fans of the theater for years and are thrilled to be working with them on a regular basis. To celebrate this, we will be taking over the theater and programming a series of MONDO MYSTERY MOVIES on October 7, 8, 9. There will be two shows each day (6 total) and like all MMM’s, there will be a poster for each that you can only get at the event. Tickets will be going on sale for these events on Tuesday, September 13th. I’ll let you know the details on those Tuesday morning.

We are excited. These shows are going to be great and we look forward to meeting a lot of our LA fans the weekend of the 7th.

Dumbo and It’s Alive On Sale Now!

Friday, September 9th, 2011

In yesterday’s email, I said that this was probably the oddest pairing of posters we’ve ever put out at once. On the surface, yes…. they are two drastically different posters, but when you look deeper, these movies are actually very similar. Both are about babies born with “unique” abilities. That totally didn’t hit me until I was talking to Rob Jones on the phone last night.

Anyways, these posters are on sale now. After the release, I will have some information to share about the next round of MONDO MYSTERY MOVIES…. these will not be in Austin this time, btw.

Poster by Tom Whalen. 24″x36″ screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 395. Printed by D&L Screenprinting. Click HERE to purchase.
Poster by Jon Smith. 24″x36″ screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 120. Printed by D&L Screenprinting. Click HERE to purchase.
