Last week, I was out in Los Angeles to have Drew Struzan sign the first ever screenprint of his work. The Frankenstein poster is the most elaborate thing we have ever done so we brought the crew of JUST LIKE BEING THERE out with us to film my time with Drew. What follows is a small look at Drew’s thoughts on Mondo, his career and an up close look at the poster….
We are also going to have a small offering of the Frankenstein prints for sale tomorrow in the store for Fantastic Fest attendees. Keep an eye on the blog in the morning and we’ll have more information for you.
Let’s have a talk…. it’s good news, though. Promise.
We are very proud to announce that we will be teaming up with the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles to do posters for special events and screenings. We have been big fans of the theater for years and are thrilled to be working with them on a regular basis. To celebrate this, we will be taking over the theater and programming a series of MONDO MYSTERY MOVIES on October 7, 8, 9. There will be two shows each day (6 total) and like all MMM’s, there will be a poster for each that you can only get at the event. Tickets will be going on sale for these events on Tuesday, September 13th. I’ll let you know the details on those Tuesday morning.
We are excited. These shows are going to be great and we look forward to meeting a lot of our LA fans the weekend of the 7th.
In yesterday’s email, I said that this was probably the oddest pairing of posters we’ve ever put out at once. On the surface, yes…. they are two drastically different posters, but when you look deeper, these movies are actually very similar. Both are about babies born with “unique” abilities. That totally didn’t hit me until I was talking to Rob Jones on the phone last night.
Anyways, these posters are on sale now. After the release, I will have some information to share about the next round of MONDO MYSTERY MOVIES…. these will not be in Austin this time, btw.

I love this poster! When we first got them in, I was really impressed at how dense the design was. There is SO MUCH going on and it’s all brought out even more by D&L’s great print job. The variant is packed with metallic inks and the flower glows!
This is my favorite Florian Bertmer poster yet. Check out the pics below and remember that it goes on sale tomorrow!
Jason Edmiston has posted a new print up for sale on his Etsy page called Trophies. You can buy it HERE and below is the image…
Last October, I shot Jason an email about commissions. He is an UNBELIEVABLE painter, so I wanted him to do something for me. Ever since I was little, I had this idea for a painting based on the Planet of the Apes, so I sent him this email….
“So, my idea for the apes painting is one that I’m shocked I’ve never seen done before. I would want you to paint the scene from the movie where you are first introduced to the apes in the corn field. Remember after they kill all of the humans and the three apes take their picture with the pile of dead humans in front of them and they’re all smiling? I LOVE THAT PART. I love that it’s like an old hunting photo. Think you could do that for me? Do you think that would be fun for you? If you want, I could get you reference photos or whatever.”
That was in October of 2010. A few months later, he sent me the above image and I freaked out! The original painting now proudly hangs in the Mondo store, so if you’re in Austin, come check it out. If you’re as big of an Apes fan as I am, grab one of these from Jason while they last!
We’re proud to announce new releases in our Universal Monsters series! This series is one of my favorites and I’m super excited to add Kevin Tong’s INVISIBLE MAN and Martin’s THE MUMMY to the checklist. We did something special on The Mummy variant. They were translated into ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs by Ann Foster, a noted independent scholar and archaeologist from Chicago, IL. Ms. Foster has studied hieroglyphs since she was 5 years old under the tutelage of her father, world renowned translator of Ancient Egyptian literature, Professor John L. Foster. She continued into her graduate studies at University of Pennsylvania. A regular female Indiana Jones. So, this poster is 100% legit! All three are on sale now!

Tomorrow, August 2nd, we will be offering tickets for the second Mondo Mystery Movie set to go down on Wednesday, August 31st at 7pm at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. Can’t announce a specific time, but tickets will drop around noon CST. You might want to refresh this LINK a bunch around that time.
If you’re not familiar with this show, let me briefly explain. We at Mondo pick a movie that we love and screen it…. the only catch is, we don’t tell anyone what it is until you’re in the theater. It could be new, old, a cartoon… anything that can play on a screen. We also release a poster of the mystery film that you can ONLY get at the screening. Last time, we screened AKIRA and not only had a Tyler Stout poster to go along with it, but had T. Stout in attendance. This time, who knows what will happen. You’ll just have to show up and be surprised. One difference between the first MMM screening and this one is that if you buy a ticket, you will get a poster automatically. The THEY LIVE screening worked very well with the poster/ ticket bundle and we’ll do this with the MMM screenings from now on.
One last thing, here is the write up I did for this MMM. There may or may not be clues in it…. you decide.
We’re all friends here, so let’s be honest… sequels are generally pretty lousy. It’s tough to beat the original, but with what we have planned for the Mondo Mystery Movie: Part 2, we think you’ll agree that the magic is back. Not only are we raising the stakes by dropping this thing into the biggest theater the Alamo has to offer, but we’re also producing a poster that you can ONLY get at this screening. Remember, at the MMM, anything that can happen… will happen.
