Top Secret Star Trek Promos Revealed!

Monday, April 6th, 2009

It’s times like this that I’m happy eyes exist.

About two months ago, we here at Mondo got a call from Paramount Pictures. Turns out,  they are fans of ours! They had taken notice of the quality of  the Poster Series and also of the artists that we use and wanted us to recommend some that we thought could turn in AMAZING artwork.  In addition to the traditional big studio promotional push, Paramount wanted to get creative and have artists reinterpret STAR TREK with their own specific style. We were thrilled to collaborate on a part of this innovative venture and I think you’ll really be happy with the results. I know we are!

Mark Todd is doing a ton of shirt designs lately. First, the new Badass Cinema shirts, now the Enterprise!

It’s probably good that I haven’t met Jesse Phillips yet. When I do, I’ll probably just stutter and stammer all slack jawed and embarass myself. He’s one of my favorites! Remember the IRON MAN poster Jesse did for us?  He totally raged on this poster featuring the Enterprise:

Hmmmm…there was one other guy that did a poster for them….who was it again? Oh yeah…TYLER STOUT! Can you imagine what this thing is going to look like?! At the time of me writing this, artwork isn’t available, but I’ve been promised to get a copy of it in the next few days. I’ll be posting it here as soon as it’s available.

Paramount also had a few of our celebrity Austin homies design their very own Enterprise models. First up is Ain’t It Cool News’ head honcho Harry Knowles’ ship:

They also had that troublemaker Robert Rodriguez do one:

st_robert_rodriguez_01

Also, veteran Alamo poster artist Bobby Dixon designed an Enterprise model for the promotion. We’re expecting photos of the finished model soon and will post them here when we get them!

If you’re like me, you’re most likely a half inch away from the computer screen trying to pick out detail on these models. Don’t you worry. If you come to the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar starting Monday, you’ll be able to see all of this and more in person!

You didn’t forget about us showing WRATH OF KHAN and ten minutes of the new STAR TREK did you? You can find information on the screening here and if you can’t make it to the show, you can see models from other designers here.

Thanks to Paramount for involving us on this project and a very special thanks to OMG Posters and Rob Jones for their help.

Jon Vermilyea Store Open!

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Alright…this is exciting.

I just went to Jon Vermilyea’s site and he has updated it with a brand new store that has about six or so incredible prints for sale. His Johnny Quasar stuff is definitely my favorite. Why haven’t vinyl figures been made of this stuff? I’m totally grabbing the MUDMAN print. He also has prints of the Mothman that he did for Fantagraphics’ BEASTS! BOOK 2 for sale.

I may have mentioned this in an earlier post or Twitter message or something, but Jon sent me early 2009 Fantastic Fest poster art yesterday. This poster is going to RAGE! Monsters gone wild!

MUTO by BLU

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

I saw this in the Fantastic Fest animated shorts program last year. Press play…It’s amazing.

Speaking of Fantastic Fest, I got an email from Jon Vermilyea today with a sketch of the 2009 poster and it is looking crazy! It’ll be out of control in 3D.

A New Giant Sized Man-Thing

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Shit!

I was just at my computer taking some orders for the new Mark Todd shirts and I got an email from the man himself. The title of the email was “Only look if you want to see your Man-Thing painting.” How could I not open it up. Here is what I saw!

man-thing

I had been at a swap meet south of Austin about two months ago and bought a bunch of comics from an old couple. Nothing really great, but this Micronauts cover screamed for the Mark Todd treatment.

He even added flocking to this one! I’ll publicly say it right now, “I love you, Mark!”

Check out www.marktoddillustration.com to see more of Mark’s commission pieces and be sure to grab a shirt and print set from Mark’s new Badass Cinema line he did for us.

P.S. Apparently there were some problems with the new site this weekend and also half the day yesterday. If you tried to purchase something and had problems, we apologize. Everything is fixed now and should work fine. Thanks for you orders, as always!

Mark Todd Invades Mondo!

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Last year, I attended my first ever San Diego Comic Con. Did I buy a lot of stuff? Let’s just say that Terror Tuesday host Zack went with me and his duffle bag literally ripped from the weight when he packed all of his comics into it…I bought more than him. Something else happened at Comic Con that I really didn’t expect. I kinda fell in love with independent publishing…specifically zines.  I got turned on to Fantastic Fest poster artist Jon Vermilyea through a zine he put out through Picturebox. Another guy that had a TON of great zines was Mark Todd. He had zines covering subjects like Disneyland deaths and the history of Chuck-E-Cheese which also came with tokens and prizes from the restaurant. He also had a bunch of redrawn silver age comic book covers hanging out all over his booth which was a HUGE deal with me. Later on, he did this painting of the cover of Fantastic Four #2 which now hangs in my living room.

Though, for me, the biggest thing at his table was a book called BAD ASSES.

bad-asses

BAD ASSES was roughly the size of a zine, but was a full on fancy publication with a bar code and everything. Basically, it’s  a check list of Mark’s favorite characters from film and TV when he was around the age of 14. Besides the six we chose for our new shirt line, it features characters like Skeletor, Mr. T, Ms. Piggy, a Sleestak and even the car from THE CAR! Sound good? It’s better than good…it’s fucking amazing!  I flipped through it and lauged…a lot. How excited was I when we asked Mark to do the new line of Badass Cinema shirts and he said yes?

badasses-gif

Not only are the shirts available through us, but so is his book, BAD ASSES, and a special set of 6 art prints!

As you’ve hopefully noticed, we’ve got a brand new website up in place of that old hoopty that we forced you to look at for who knows how long. Sorry about that, but I think that you’ll forgive us when you see all the new things we’ve got waiting for you. One of the first things I’m proud to show you is the new Mondo Monster Mouth collar tag.

monster-tag-for-web

Pretty much every Mondo shirt from now on will be sporting this new tag. They are super soft, too. Don’t be afraid that they will scratch the back of your neck. I’ve been rocking these in my shirts for a while “testing” them and they’ve never once bugged me.

monster-tag-mouth-open

The tag company said that it was the most intricate, pain in the ass tag they’ve ever made, but I think it came out great. I hope you all like it, too.

Another new thing is this blog. It will be updated everyday…I promise you that. Don’t think this is going to just be a place where we try to sell you stuff. Seriously, I don’t condone that and Mondo isn’t gonna play that game. We’re gonna talk about the good things in life like comics, movies, and TV shows among other things. Sure, we’ll let you know when we release something, but that will be a very small part of this blog. I want this to become a place for you to hang out kinda like your friend’s basement when you were a junior in high school.

We also have a Twitter account. Trust me, you’ll want to sign up for that, too. So, to sum it up, get with us on this blog, Twitter, Facebook and our mailing list if you want to stay in the know and… you know what, I don’t care, here’s my personal AIM…THECACTUSISH. If you have any questions or you just want to talk, instant message me. Why not?

Before I go, a lot of you have been emailing and asking about the remaining metal Robocop posters. We DO have extras and we ARE going to sell them through the site very soon. You didn’t hear it from me, but the only way you’ll know when they go on sale is if you sign up on Twitter.

Enjoy the new shirts and the new site. Let me know what you all think!

Lamour Supreme X Datapop Shirt and Poster

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Lamour Supreme is a guy that totally murders every illustration he does…seriously. Everything he touches turns to gold. Whether it be his CRAZY portfolio or new vinyl figures coming from Super 7 and CURE X MISHKA, his work is ALWAYS beautiful. Because of his distinct style and uncanny ability to produce raging works of art, he was the only one I wanted doing the event shirt for next week’s DATAPOP party.

lamour-supreme-x-gameboy-for-web

Shirt available HERE.

Lamour went so crazy on the shirt graphic that we thought it would also look great as an art print.
